Tips & Tricks

A renovation can leave you with a pile of pipe, wire, fixtures, ductwork, and steel before the new room is even finished. Tossing everything into one trailer feels quick, but mixed metal loads take longer to sort and may be graded at the lowest value present.

A little separation at the job site keeps the final load cleaner.

Build four sorting piles

Start with four containers or marked areas: copper, brass, aluminum, and steel. Keep stainless steel and lead-acid batteries separate as well; they are different materials with different handling requirements.

Copper

Copper pipe, wire, and tubing usually deserve their own pile. Bare, clean copper is different from insulated wire, soldered pipe, or copper with attached fittings. Don’t burn insulation to clean wire. It creates a safety and air-quality problem, and it can damage the material.

Brass

Set aside plumbing valves, faucets, keys, and yellow-brass fixtures. Remove obvious non-metal attachments when they come off safely, but don’t spend an afternoon cutting apart a fixture for a small piece of metal.

Aluminum

Aluminum siding, gutters, rims, and clean sheet can be worth sorting apart from steel. A magnet helps: if it sticks firmly, the item probably contains ferrous steel. If it doesn’t, check the item for coatings, plastic, or mixed materials before placing it with clean aluminum.

Steel

Keep structural steel, appliances, shelving, and other ferrous material together when they share a similar condition. Pull out wood, insulation, drywall, and loose trash first. A cleaner load is easier to weigh and inspect.

Keep the job site safe

Use gloves, eye protection, and a stable container for sharp pipe ends and sheet metal. Store batteries upright and away from sparks. Never put refrigerant cylinders, pressurized containers, chemicals, or sealed tanks into a scrap bin without asking how they should be handled.

If a refrigerator, window air conditioner, or other cooling equipment is part of the cleanout, refrigerant must be recovered before final disposal. Leave that work to a qualified technician rather than cutting a line on the driveway.

When a pickup makes sense

A small renovation load may fit in a pickup bed. Larger commercial, contractor, or estate cleanouts can create a different problem: too much material to haul safely and too little time to sort it twice. We offer free hauling for large industrial loads within Jackson County, so call before loading a trailer if you want to discuss the material and access.

We purchase ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including bare bright copper, yellow brass, aluminum wheels, structural steel, stainless steel, and lead-acid batteries. Bring a current photo ID for a scrap-metal transaction in Michigan, and keep each grade separated until the load is weighed.

Metal prices move with the market, and the exact value depends on grade, cleanliness, weight, and the day’s pricing. Send us a description of the material or call 517-937-7748 before you make the trip. We can tell you what to separate, what to leave together, and whether pickup is the better option.
